Wetland Restoration |
Creation of large pond with terraced bottom to provide a variety of depths and seasonal and permanent aquatic habitats. An island was created in the middle as well as a slight berm around the eastern edge. Native wetland shrubs, flowers, sedges and trees were established around the perimeter to offer shading, cover and breeding areas for insects. Total acres: 0.56 |
This wetland will function as a breeding area for amphibians and insects, a water recharge area for nearby aquifers, as well as a resting and breeding area for many species of waterfowl and reptiles. The creation of the wetland is part of a larger reforestation complex completed on a 9 acre field that required the farmer to cross Black Creek as part of his agricultural operations. Restoration of this site also has the impact of eliminating the need to drive through Black Creek causing disturbance to fish and reptile habitat as well as negatively impacting water quality. |

Reforestation |
On the west side of Black Creek approximately 7000 trees were planted. These consisted of Black Walnut, Silver Maple, Yellow Birch, White Birch, White Pine, Red Oak and Bur Oak. Total acres: 9.47 |
The reforestation of this block provides early successional habitat for a variety of species. Restoration of this site also has the impact of eliminating the need to drive through Black Creek for agricultural operations causing disturbance to fish and reptile habitat as well as negatively impacting water quality. |

Reforestation |
On the east side of Black Creek sloped valley lands and floodplain areas reforested. Species mix included: Black Walnut, Silver Maple, Yellow Birch, White Birch, White Pine, Red Oak and Bur Oak. Total acres: 2.05 |
The reforestation of this block provides early successional habitat for a variety of species. Established forest cover will assist in stabilization of the erodible slopes leading down to Black Creek. This will further reduce sedimentation of the Creek and further destruction of fish and amphibian habitat. The bulking up of forest cover along Black Creek will increase the wildlife corridor opportunities and offer temperature control. |
